[AIM is a statutory body under the Prime Minister’s Office chartered to create new wealth for the nation through promotion and facilitation of investment activities and initiatives by the public and private sector in relation to innovation. ] Alpha Catalyst Consulting has been instrumental in leading Phase 1 of the project, whereby a scorecard was developed and piloted, to help public listed companies holistically self-evaluate their innovation management strategies, processes, systems, and impact. The prototype scorecard explored 8 different areas of measurement:
Leaders from most of these companies attended a breakfast roundtable held on 29 January, 2014 at Hilton K.L. to be recognised, to share their thoughts and views, and to hear about Phase 2 of the NCII. The focus of NCII Phase 2 is to address a key gap that was uncovered from Phase 1 – namely the lack of visibility and understanding by the companies on how much investment is being channeled into innovation. (Only about 20% of the companies knew how and where their resources are being spent on innovation.) In Phase 2, experts from NESTA (the UK’s national foundation for innovation), Inngot (leading UK intellectual property experts) and Alpha Catalyst Consulting join forces to develop a detailed measurement tool that can be used by companies, to track investments and returns from innovation, taking into account both tangible & intangible assets. An endeavour of this level of detail is perhaps the first to be undertaken in the world. The inability to penetrate large organizations presents a significant challenge for our local MSC companies to grow. In an effort to increase the adoption of Malaysian Made solutions MdeC (Multimedia Development Corporation) approached us to design an interaction that would somehow benefit all parties. This was the birth of the InnovAsian® Catalyst Camp (ICC). Through this initiative, qualifying MSC companies are invited to join a 2-day workshop which includes an introduction to the process of innovation and a short immersion into a large organization. They are then given 1 to 2 weeks to propose an innovative solution that would help the large organization leap frog within their market. With 4 of such sessions being run (with AirAsia, Celcom, Faber Group and MARA), it has proved to be an important milestone in creating value.
The InnovAsian® Catalyst Camp gives large organizations a chance to source for ideas beyond their walls. Such an initiative allows companies to obtain new ideas with minimal investment. Though only started in 2011, the ICC has, to date connected 57 MSC status companies with the large organizations. Out of all the ideas that have been proposed, 30 ideas have been selected by host companies, with 15 potential deals. Value created does not end with the target session as relationship built between the MSC companies and the large organizations continue to persist. To propagate a culture of innovation within Malaysian organizations, Alpha Catalyst Consulting with the support of MDeC (Multimedia Development Corporation) organized the InnovAsian Forum. This provided a platform for leaders from innovative Malaysian-based organizations to share their experiences, from successes to missed steps. The 1-day event was attended by 100 people, including members of the corporate and public sectors, academics and entrepreneurs. Highlights of the event were sessions by Azran Osman Rani (CEO AirAsia X) and Adzhar Ibrahim (Head of people AirAsia Berhad and previous Human Resource Director DiGi Berhad).
Other speakers were no less engaging, with Eduardo, Principal from Monitor Group (Singapore) sharing the global scene in innovation followed by Nik Ahmad Faizul from MIGHT who shared the Foresight study of the Malaysian landscape. The Chairman of Technip Malaysia shared practices within the Oil & Gas industry while Saliman Zainal shared the scene within Bank Rakyat. The format of the forum was made to be very lively with moderation and crowd-interaction from Kamarul Bahrin of Astro Awani. |
